Our Mission

Kalo500 was founded on a straightforward premise: most people have no reliable way to understand the true energy cost of physical activity. Step-counting apps give vague approximations. Generic online calculators ignore body composition. The result is a fitness landscape full of guesswork — and discouragement.

We set out to change that by building free, scientifically grounded tools that translate exercise physiology research into clear, actionable numbers. Our name reflects this ambition: Kalo (from the Greek kalos, meaning "good" — and shorthand for kilocalorie) and 500, representing the meaningful daily calorie deficit that research associates with sustainable, healthy weight management.

The Science Behind Our Tools

Every calorie estimate produced by Kalo500 is grounded in the Metabolic Equivalent of Task (MET) framework — the same standard used by the American College of Sports Medicine (ACSM) and published in the Compendium of Physical Activities. MET values represent the ratio of a person's working metabolic rate relative to their resting metabolic rate, allowing us to account for both the intensity of an activity and the individual's body weight.

Formula: Calories burned (kcal) = MET value × body weight (kg) × duration (hours)

This approach is meaningfully more accurate than flat per-minute estimates or step-based models, because it scales proportionally with the user's actual mass and the verified metabolic demand of each activity. We continually review new research and update our MET reference values accordingly.

Kalo500 does not require account creation, does not use tracking cookies for advertising, and does not transmit any personal metrics to our servers. All data you enter (age, weight, height, body fat percentage) is stored exclusively in your browser's local storage and never leaves your device.
